Final Exams U.S.A Evaluation

Why do we rely on outdated learning methods?
Why do we rely on outdated learning methods?

Although this is an already over-discussed topic, it is still a pressing matter.

Here is my thought on the current education and evaluation system in U.S.A

U.S still relies on outdated teaching throughout high-school and college, formatted to fit not the current global changes but someone who is growing up in the 50’s. Furthermore “exams” are still developed in order to evaluate whether one is prepared to identify and remember current material instead of evaluating whether one is prepared to apply what he/she learned.

Moreover, teaching focuses on our short-memory.

Example: In math, we have to memorize formulas, and in most cases, if we do the exercise becomes simple enough that all we do is pull out our calculators and plug in numbers. We do not need to understand the formula, just memorize it.

Creativity is discouraged and innovation not part of the curriculum.

Analytic skills have little or no value.

Calculators are more important than brains.

Computers are used in every profession, but, because teaching is focused on memory, they are not allowed in exams nor are they used in effective teaching.

Classroom learning is not targeted to students but to curriculum which makes classes unbearable for a new generation that values the self and constant reinventing.

As an international student, English is not my first language. Currently doing an M.B.A in U.S. I have been exposed to different teaching methods and school systems. Here, individuals will still excel as long as they are driven from an young age and also study and improve outside of the classroom. So here are a few questions:

What about those who need guidance from a young age?

Why does the school system punishes for life someone who does not know how to value an education in his teenage years?

Why are G.P.A’s worth more than individuals?

I will keep this short and end it here, but I want to hear from YOU, what is your thought on the current school system in U.S? Do you want to hear more of this “issue”? Do you disagree or agree with my thoughts? and why?
